Fall 2019
The appearance of the tower is the result of trying to find a harmonious balance between a reduced overall form and the complex network of trusses that reach up the tower's façade. The glass façade of the tower is wrapped in a curtain wall structure that holds a matrix of suspended hyperbolic paraboloids that are imagined to be made of a molded semi-reflective plexiglass. The result is a twisting network of reflective scales that shade the interior of the tower while the exterior would be actively playing with the sunlight.
The tower is intended to be a humorous play on the smoke stacks located to the south east of the site within the Portlands. Though the tower does stand towering above its neighbouring buildings, it was designed in anticipation of the eastward expansion of Toronto’s downtown.
